"Leave It Better Than You Found It!"
Grant Funding Guidelines

The Claude W. and Dolly Ahrens Foundation was established in 1993 as a
private, family foundation through an endowment gifted by Claude W.
Ahrens.  It is governed by a Board of Directors that sets policy and is
responsible for the review of grant proposals.  The Claude W. and Dolly
Ahrens Foundation currently employs three full-time staff members and has
two part-time college interns.

Please review the following five steps before submitting a funding request:

Step One: Do You Qualify?

  • Grants are made only to organizations that are tax-exempt under
section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue code and who are not
classified as private foundations under section 509(a) of the code.  In
selected cases, we may consider support for projects sponsored by
    government entities.

  • Grants are not made to individuals.

  • Grants are typically made only to projects located in central
Iowa communities of Poweshiek county.  Please note that this
does NOT apply to grants given towards our Playgrounds for
Iowa program.  Projects in all counties of Iowa are eligible to
apply for the Playgrounds for Iowa program.

  • Grants are typically not made for general operating support unless
the project is for a startup organization.

  • Grants are not made to create or fund scholarships.

  • Grants are not made to political and religious organizations.

  • Grants are not made to large, public charities, such as: the United
Way; the March of Dimes; American Cancer Society; the Salvation
Army; etc...  Instead, the Claude W. and Dolly Ahrens Foundation
prefers to fund organizations that do not receive wide public support.

  • Grant funding has traditionally been for the arts, community
enhancement, education, the environment, health care, parks &
    recreation and social services.

  • Organizations may also submit applications through a sponsoring
organization, if the sponsor does in fact qualify for “step one” and
provides written authorization confirming its willingness to act as a
    fiscal sponsor.

                  Grant Application Procedures page.)

on our strategic plan and reprioritizing our funding
strategies.  More information regarding our future
